Welcome to MODENA

Information about MODENA The town of Modena is located in the middle of the Po valley, in one of the most developed areas in the whole continent, along the main routes of the trading traffic between Northern Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. Roman colony in 183 b.C., Modena was the theatre of the war between Brutus and Mark Antony that marked the ascent of Octavian and the birth of the second Triumvirate. After Ferrara fell to Pope Clement VIII, the Este family established a duchy at Modena in the closing years of the 16th century. In 1796 the French troops entered in Modena and they started a dominion that lasted till 1814. From that year on, the Austro-Este dukes Francesco IV and Francesco V ruled the State till 1859. Declined the Este sovereignty, the city formed part of the Italian Reign. Modena is an industrial zone blessed with Italy's highest per-capita income, and it can seem as sleek as the sports cars it produces. This is partially because of its 20th-century face-lift, the result of the city being largely rebuilt following the destructive World War II bombings. These factors create a stark contrast to both the antiquity and the poverty so noticeable in other regions. Modena is home to automobile and racing giants Ferrari, Maserati, and De Tomaso, for some products of its gastronomy, such as tortellini, Lambrusco wine, balsamic vinegar and parmesan cheese. Locals also proudly claim opera star Luciano Pavarotti as one of their greatest exports. It is a town that, in 40 years, has become one of the richest and most advanced in Europe. The whole of the historical town centre, with its arcades, churches, palaces and the typical colours of the Po town, offer attractions for tourists and lovers of Italian art alike.
